The Montessori bookshelf, from A to Z
A Montessori bookshelf isn't just another shelf: it's a low bookshelf where books are displayed face-out, at a child's height. The result: the child sees their books, chooses them and puts them back all on their own — and develops a taste for reading. Here's everything you need to know, and how we craft them, at Elysta, in our workshop in Andenne.
What is a Montessori bookshelf?
A Montessori bookshelf is low, open and at a child's height. Its distinctive feature: books are placed with the cover facing the child, on display ledges, instead of packed spine-first. The child doesn't need an adult to see, take and put back a book.
It's the direct application of the Montessori principle "help me to do it myself" to the world of books: we make reading accessible and desirable.
Why display books face-out
- The appeal — the cover draws the eye; the child wants to go and fetch the book themselves.
- Independence — they choose, they leaf through, they tidy up, without depending on an adult.
- Easy tidying — putting a book back in its place becomes simple and logical.
- Concentration — a few well-showcased titles beat a mass of tightly packed books.
From what age?
As soon as the child takes an interest in books and can grab them on their own — often around 1 year old. At the start, you display very few titles; then you add more as they grow. Our model is recommended from 2 years.
Setting up a reading corner
A face-out bookshelf ideally goes hand in hand with a real reading corner: a soft seat (cushion, small rug), warm lighting, a calm space, and few books at a time — which you refresh by rotation.
We break it all down, piece by piece, in our article How to set up a Montessori reading corner.
The wood: why birch
Our bookshelves are made of birch wood — light, dense and stable, pleasant to the touch and sturdy over time. We finish it with a water-based varnish, designed for little hands. A healthy, bright piece of furniture, made to last.

Because the cover draws the eye: the child is captivated by the image and wants to go and fetch the book themselves. That's what sparks independence and the pleasure of reading — far more than a row of spines.
