The Montessori bed breaks with a habit: you place the sleeping surface right at floor level so the child is free to move. But at what age should you take the step, and how do you avoid restless nights? Here is a clear guide.
The principle of the low bed
A Montessori bed is a low bed, placed on the floor or on a very low base. The child climbs in and out alone, without bars or help. They decide when to get up, explore their room safely and develop their independence at bedtime as well as on waking.
It's not just a question of furniture: it's a way of trusting the child and setting up a room that's within their reach.
What age to switch to a Montessori bed?
There is no single age. Here are some benchmarks according to the most common stages:
| Age | What changes | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 10 months | Baby doesn't move around yet | Possible (topponcino, mattress on the floor), under supervision |
| 10 months – 2 years | They crawl then walk | Ideal period to start the low bed |
| 2 – 3 years | Out of the crib | Very good moment, house bed appreciated |
| 3 years + | Independence established | Low bed or house bed, junior size |
Low bed or house bed?
Both respect the Montessori principle. The house bed adds a frame shaped like a little house that reassures and structures the space; the low bed stays more understated and discreet.
| Criterion | Low bed | House bed |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended age | From 10-15 months | From 2 years |
| Effect | Understated, discreet | Imaginative, cosy |
| Visual footprint | Low | More present |
| Adaptability | Very good | Good |
Making the room safe
Since the child moves around freely, it's the room — not the bed — that you make safe:
- Fix heavy furniture to the wall (chest of drawers, shelf).
- Socket covers and cables out of reach.
- Clear floor and non-slip rug near the bed.
- A small bed rail or a bolster for the first few nights if needed.
- Nothing dangerous or fragile at child height.
Making the transition a success
- Keep the same bedtime rituals (story, night light, comforter).
- Allow a few days to adjust: it's normal for them to explore at first.
- Calmly and without drama, walk them back if they get up.
- Involve the child: choosing their bedding, their evening book helps them make the bed their own.

Frequently asked questions
At what age is a Montessori bed suitable?
You can start very early (mattress on the floor from the first months); the transition most often happens between 15 months and 3 years, when the child moves out of the crib.
Will my child fall out?
Since the bed is low, any roll onto the floor is harmless. A rug and, if needed, a small bolster for the first few nights are enough.
Low bed or house bed, which to choose?
The low bed is understated and starts earlier; the house bed, from 2 years, adds a reassuring sense of imagination. Both are adaptable.
What mattress size?
The standard sizes (60×120, 70×140, 90×190) depending on age. The exact dimension is indicated on each product page.
