How do you choose a Montessori learning tower?

The learning tower is often the first Montessori piece of furniture a family buys. Well chosen, it stays with your child for several years and truly changes daily life. Here is everything to look at before you decide.

What is a learning tower for?

The learning tower — also called a “learning tower” or discovery tower — is a small, secured platform that brings your child up to counter height. Surrounded by a guardrail, they can safely take part in everyday tasks: washing vegetables, mixing a batter, brushing their teeth at the sink or watching what's happening on the table.

In the Montessori spirit, this is not a gadget: it's a tool for independence. Your child does things “with” the adult rather than watching from below. They develop their motor skills, their confidence and their vocabulary, and they are often calmer because they are included in the activity.

From what age?

We recommend the tower as soon as your child stands up steadily on their own, and always under adult supervision. Some children climb up earlier, others later: it's steady standing, not the birthday date, that matters.

A quality tower stays useful until age 5-6, and even beyond to reach a washbasin or a sink. It's a purchase that lasts.

Fixed or adjustable: which model?

There are two main families. The right choice depends on your child's age, the space you have and the intended length of use. In both cases, a well-designed tower comes apart easily to be stored flat when not in use.

Measure before you buy

The most overlooked point. Before choosing, measure the height of your countertop (often 90-92 cm) and the available floor space. The platform must bring your child to the right height without them having to lean over.

  • Countertop height: measure from the floor to the top of the counter.
  • Floor footprint: allow around 44 × 50 cm when set up.
  • Storage: easily dismantled without damage, the tower stores flat when not in use.
  • Child's weight: check the stated maximum load.

Safety: the points to check

  • Wide, tip-resistant base, low centre of gravity.
  • Guardrail on the sides and at the back.
  • Rounded corners, no sharp edges or protruding screws.
  • Birch wood or quality plywood, sturdy assembly.
  • Healthy finish: water-based varnish certified safe for children.
  • A non-slip standing surface, preferably.

Elysta's Elytours

Our learning towers are made of wood (birch plywood) in our workshop in Andenne, with a safe water-based varnish. They come in four characters — Penguin, Giraffe, Dragon, Elephant — so the useful object also becomes a companion. Wide base, guardrail and rounded corners: safety is built in from the design stage, and the parts are repairable. They come apart easily, without damage, to be stored flat when you're not using them.

The price is the same whatever the character: it's up to you to choose the one that will make your child smile.

In short

Choose according to age and space: an adjustable tower if you want it to last, a fixed one for a simple first age. All of them come apart easily to be stored flat when not in use. Check the stability, the guardrail and the finish. And measure your countertop before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

From what age can you use a learning tower?

As soon as your child stands up steadily on their own, and always under adult supervision.

Is a learning tower dangerous?

Well designed (wide base, guardrail, rounded corners) and used under supervision, it is safe. Avoid placing it near a heat source or with dangerous objects within reach.

What's the difference with a simple step stool?

The step stool has no guardrail: the child can tip over. The tower surrounds the child and secures the standing position at height.

Up to what age is it useful?

Often until age 5-6 and beyond, especially to reach a washbasin. An adjustable model extends the use even further.
