Wooden nursery furniture: standards, safety and durability

Equipping a nursery or kindergarten is nothing like furnishing a bedroom. The furniture undergoes heavy use, must meet safety requirements and last for years. Here are the criteria that make the difference — and how to frame a project.

Thinking about heavy use

In a group setting, a piece of furniture is used dozens of times a day, by dozens of children. Birch wood or quality plywood, sturdy joints and hard-wearing finishes are not a luxury: they are exactly what stops you from having to buy again in two years.

Safety and compliance

Safety comes first, and several standards apply to furniture and equipment for early childhood:

  • Stability and anti-tip design, wall fixings for tall furniture.
  • Softened corners and edges, no protruding parts.
  • Healthy materials: water-based varnish, free of harmful solvents.
  • Low furniture that encourages autonomy and supervision.
  • Common standards: EN 1729 (school tables/chairs), EN 716 (beds), EN 1176 (playgrounds/play structures).

Repairable rather than disposable

Truly durable furniture is furniture you can repair. Replaceable parts extend the life of the piece and reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) — a key criterion for a responsible nursery and for a public or non-profit budget.

What we make

  • Motor-skills modules and psychomotor courses.
  • Reading corners and low bookcases.
  • Low storage units, named lockers, cloakrooms.
  • Suitable tables, benches and seating.
  • Barriers, radiator guards, bespoke fittings.

Framing the budget

A group project is costed according to the surface area, the furniture and the installation. A few ballpark figures to situate your request:

Type of projectIndicative budget
A few modules / one corner2,000 – 5,000 €
An equipped room5,000 – 15,000 €
Complete fit-out> 15,000 €

How a project unfolds

We start from your photos and dimensions, clarify the need, propose a costed sketch, build it in our workshop and then handle delivery (and installation depending on the project). Everything is detailed on the Nurseries & schools page, where you can also request a quote.
